Belgian Red Cross Flanders

Belgian Red Cross Flanders consists of two entities, both recognized by the government:

  • The Flemish Community of the Belgian Red Cross, a public utility institution with legal personality under the law of March 30, 1891, with its registered office at Papenvest 78, 1000 Brussels, registered in the CBE with number 0406.729.809; and
  • Belgian Red Cross Flanders, a sui generis entity with legal personality under the decree of April 26, 2024, with its registered office at Motstraat 40, 2800 Mechelen, registered in the CBE with number 1012.657.135.

Both entities are located at Motstraat 40, 2800 Mechelen.

Affiliated Entities

The following non-profit organizations and public utility foundations are affiliated with Belgian Red Cross Flanders and jointly carry out certain activities. They all have their registered office at Motstraat 40, 2800 Mechelen, except for Rodekruishotel vzw, which is based at Polderwind 4, 8377 Zuienkerke.

Recognitions and Codes of Conduct

Below is an overview of the recognitions and subscribed codes of conduct for Red Cross Flanders and its affiliated entities.

Recognition as an NGO

Blood Supply

We are recognized as a blood institution by Ministerial Decree of November 30, 2017 (NIHDI No. 7-95009-03 – 98-1001), as a laboratory for clinical biology (NIHDI No. 8-12650-16-998), and as an intermediary structure (under the Human Body Material Act of December 19, 2008). The supervisory authorities are the FPS Health, Food Chain Safety, and Environment and the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP).

Emergency Assistance

The Belgian Red Cross has been appointed by the government to manage the emergency number 105 (central dispatching and non-urgent patient transport), supervised by the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (www.bipt.be).

Additionally, the Belgian Red Cross has been assigned by the government to provide disaster relief, including urgent medical aid and urgent psychosocial intervention as part of official emergency and intervention plans. Social Activities

We are recognized as a nationally organized youth association, supervised by the Department of Culture, Youth, and Media of the Flemish Government (www.sociaalcultureel.be/jeugd/index.aspx).

We are recognized as a social-tourism association, supervised by Tourism Flanders (www.toerismevlaanderen.be).

We are recognized as an organization with a specific mission, namely a special library for long-term patients and individuals residing in nursing homes, care facilities, or hospitals. The supervisory authority is the Department of Culture, Youth, and Media of the Flemish Government (https://www.vlaanderen.be/cjm/nl/cultuur/bovenlokale-cultuur/bibliotheekbeleid-vlaanderen).

We are affiliated with several codes of conduct:

We provide reception services for asylum seekers in Belgium under the federal government’s mandate, following the law of January 12, 2017. Supervision is provided by the Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (www.fedasil.be). Staff members within asylum reception centers must adhere to the Code of Ethics established by ministerial decree on December 19, 2013 (Code of Ethics).
